STEM Programs

The Hampton Branch conducted a STEM Workshop for middle and high school girls on April 27, 2024. The workshop was held at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Newport News, Viginia.  The day began with a panel discussion with the STEMist  who conducted the workshops.  The workshops, which repeated themselves in the morning and afternoon, were conducted by a chemist, who taught the girls to make moisturizers and lotions; a meteorologist, who taught the girls about cloud formation and condensation; a nurse that taught CPR;, a mathematician, who taught the correlation between mathematics and music; and, an engineer, who assisted the girls in constructing a bridge that was weight bearing and structurally sound.

The girls were treated to a continental breakfast, a full lunch, and goodie bags full of STEM items to take home.  Senior high school girls were also given a walking tour of Christopher Newport College in Newport News.

The Senior Naval Science Instructor, Commander Curtis Brown, from Green Run High Schoo’s NJROTC, and his students, served as the runners for the day.
